Ios Island may be one of the smallest Greek islands, but it packs a romantic punch despite its diminutive size. Couples looking for a tranquil getaway will find plenty of opportunities to relax and reconnect with each other. The stunning beaches are a must-visit attraction on Ios, boasting crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine golden sand, and breathtaking island views.

These hidden gems offer a unique chance to explore and learn about the island’s rich history and culture together.
Best times to visit Ios Greece best beaches for couples
September and early October are undoubtedly the most ideal times for couples to visit Ios. The island is famously known as a party haven, with June, July, and August being the wildest months – think college students and party enthusiasts galore! As much as we appreciate a lively atmosphere, it’s not exactly our cup of tea. Fast-forward to September and October, when the college crowd returns to school, leaving the island eerily quiet. The best part?
You can practically have the beaches to yourself (more on that later). In our experience, these months offer the perfect setting for an intimate getaway, allowing you to bask in the serenity of the surroundings. When sharing your travel moments, don’t forget to caption them with phrases like ‘traveling solo’ or ‘being at peace’, and draw inspiration from our vast library of 700 captions on finding solace while exploring new horizons.
Romantic stays near Ios best beaches
Ios, one of the Greek Islands we’ve had the pleasure of visiting, truly stands out when it comes to offering luxurious and romantic getaways at an affordable price point. Our September visit allowed us to experience some of the most stunning suites on the island, including these gorgeous retreats and this breathtaking private pool suite. What’s more impressive is that we were able to enjoy these indulgent stays for significantly less than what you’d typically expect to pay at other islands.
For travelers looking for a romantic luxury experience without breaking the bank, Ios is definitely a top contender.
Budget to visit Ios beaches for couples
While we may not have won the lottery (and even if we did, we’d still be mindful of our spending), we’ve learned to travel within a budget. This doesn’t mean we’re looking for rock-bottom deals or sacrificing comfort, but rather planning and prioritizing our expenses in advance. With this approach, we can enjoy a range of experiences without breaking the bank. When it comes to Ios Chora, we’ve found that it offers an incredible value proposition for couples.
To give you a better idea of what to expect, let’s take a closer look at some typical expense categories and what you might pay.
Luxury stays
In our experience, Ios stands out as the top choice for luxury stays in the Greek Islands. Having visited multiple times, we’ve had the pleasure of staying at both luxurious cliffside suites with private pools and brand new suites with private pools. The value proposition is unbeatable – in September, the price is roughly half that of other islands, yet you get to enjoy stunning accommodations that are quieter and more enjoyable.
Our stay cost around €300 per night, although some nights were slightly lower at €280. In comparison, you’d need to budget significantly more for similar-quality accommodations on Mykonos or Santorini, with prices reaching €500-€600 per night. What’s more, the staff at both properties were exceptional and some of the kindest people we’ve met.
At this price point, a delicious breakfast was included, featuring unlimited homemade food that we enjoyed throughout the day, even ordering large portions to save on lunch.
Beautiful stays
One of our most cherished island getaways is at this exquisite boutique hotel. The property boasts a diverse range of accommodations, from cozy studios to luxurious rooms featuring private hot tubs. We’ve had the pleasure of staying there twice and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The hotel’s warm hospitality is attributed to its family-owned management, led by Dimitris and his loving family. Our four-night stay cost €378, which included a delectable breakfast spread.
Our room boasted a spacious outdoor patio with breathtaking views of the pool, town, and surrounding landscape, as well as a compact fridge and tasteful decor that added to our overall sense of relaxation.
Food
In Ios, food enthusiasts will be delighted to know that dining out is an affordable option. The generous portions ensure great value for money, especially if you’re someone who enjoys eating out. Gyros, in particular, are a steal at around €3.50 per person. For a sit-down dinner, the cost ranges from €20 to €35 for two people. However, it’s always possible to make your meal even more budget-friendly.
Transportation
When planning your trip to Ios, it’s essential to consider the island’s logistics. Since there is no airport on the island, you’ll need to take the ferry to reach Ios. In September, a one-way ticket from Athens can cost around €90 per person, although prices may vary depending on the type of ferry and time of booking. Interestingly, Ios has a strategic location, making it just 30 minutes away from Santorini by ferry – a significantly shorter journey than arriving from Athens!
If you’re already passing through Athens, you might want to spend a few days exploring the city, with plenty of autumnal activities to enjoy. You can find more information on what to do in Athens during the fall season here. Once on the island, you’ll need to arrange transportation to get around and access Ios’ beautiful beaches. Rental options include cars, ATVs, or scooters, with prices ranging from €200 for a 4-day car rental to €10-€20 per day for gas.

Secret beaches in Ios: The best beaches in Ios for couples
One of the enduring appeals of Ios Island lies in its array of secluded and untamed beaches, where serenity and solitude are guaranteed. Our experiences on the island have been nothing short of idyllic, with September being our preferred month to visit. The calm atmosphere allows for an unparalleled level of tranquility, as we’ve discovered hidden coves and stretches of sand where we were the only ones present, or at most shared with a handful of fellow beachgoers.
In this segment, we’re delighted to share our top picks for Ios’ most secluded and enchanting beaches, perfect for those seeking an authentic island experience. As you explore these unspoiled coastlines, remember to pack essentials like food, water, and sun protection. Due to the lack of facilities, self-sufficiency is key. We recommend bringing a reliable supply of hydration and sustenance, as well as a portable umbrella or parasol to shield yourself from the Mediterranean sun.
If you forget to bring one, don’t worry – many local markets offer affordable options for around €10. With these simple precautions in place, you’ll be free to indulge in the untainted beauty of Ios’ wilderness coast.
Kolitsani Beach, one of the dreamiest beaches in Ios
Kolitsani Beach, nestled at the base of Ios’ cliffs, is an idyllic destination that offers a perfect blend of accessibility and natural beauty. Situated just 5 minutes from the town’s iconic windmills, this stunning beach boasts golden sand and crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for relaxation, swimming, or snorkeling. Its unique location on either side of the cliffs provides a natural shelter from the winds, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat.
This popular beach is also notable for being shark-free, giving visitors greater peace of mind as they enjoy the sun, sand, and sea. It’s no wonder that Kolitsani Beach holds a special place in Marie’s heart, despite her difficulty in choosing favorites. Before you head to this picturesque destination, it’s worth noting that it’s a nude beach, so please be respectful of others when planning your visit. To get there, you have several options.
If you’re staying in Ios Chora, the beach is within walking distance – approximately 20 minutes from the town center. Alternatively, you can drive through the town and follow the signs to Kolitsani Beach. The paved road will lead you to a designated parking area, where you can safely leave your vehicle before making the short descent to the beach. With its well-marked path and gentle incline, the 10-minute walk from the car park is easily manageable, even with luggage or a cooler in tow.
Just be sure to follow the white arrows down, and you’ll soon find yourself at this serene Ios beach, ready to soak up the sun and enjoy the scenery.
Tris Klisies, one of the best hidden beaches in Ios
Tris Klisies, a secluded haven for couples on Ios’ southeastern coast, is a gem we stumbled upon during our second visit to the Greek island. The beach’s seclusion is thanks to its rugged access path, which winds its way down from a rocky cliffside. As one of the most isolated beaches in Ios, it offers an unparalleled retreat for couples seeking a romantic getaway. When we visited, we were among only three couples on the beach, giving us a sense of exclusivity and tranquility.
The beach itself boasts a thick blanket of sand and crystal-clear waters, perfectly complemented by the towering cliffs that shield it from the wind. A nearby pathway invites exploration, but be aware that the adjacent strand is already in shadow by early afternoon, while Tris Klisies remains bathed in sunlight for longer. The beach’s charm extends to its resident goats, whose bells will announce their arrival as they make their way down to the water’s edge.
While this adds a playful touch, it’s worth noting that their droppings do enter the water, making snorkeling not the most romantic experience. However, the beach excels for swimming, exploring the surrounding areas, and simply relaxing amidst breathtaking views. To reach Tris Klisies, follow the well-paved road along the coast, which offers a scenic drive with stunning mountain vistas. Alternatively, turn your day into a beach-hopping adventure!
As you approach the beach, a small church will come into view, accompanied by a carpark where you can leave your vehicle. Begin your descent down the rocky path, careful to follow it as it winds its way down from a wrecked car at the path’s starting point. The 15-minute walk down is easily manageable, and surprisingly, the ascent takes only half that time.
Loretzaina Beach, one of the most accessible secluded beaches in Ios
Nestled on the west coast of Ios island, Loretzaina Beach, also affectionately referred to as ‘Loretzena Beach’, is a secluded gem waiting to be discovered. This picturesque cove is situated at the foot of a paved road and boasts an untouched natural beauty that’s hard to find elsewhere. The shore is lined with thin golden sand, while crystal-clear turquoise waters gently lap against the surrounding cliffs, creating a serene ambiance.
The beach is ideal for both swimming and snorkeling, making it an excellent spot for those seeking relaxation and an immersive island experience. What’s more, its secluded nature ensures that you’re unlikely to encounter crowds, allowing for a peaceful afternoon spent soaking up the sun. To get there, simply head north from Ios Chora along the fully paved road, which takes approximately 15 minutes. Parking is available right near the beach, making it easily accessible.
Kalamos Beach, one of the most stunning remote beaches in Ios
Kalamos Beach, a hidden gem on Ios, is a breathtaking long stretch of sand that remains relatively unknown to tourists due to its remote location and limited accessibility. But for those willing to venture off the beaten path, Kalamos Beach offers an unparalleled experience. The beach boasts crystal-clear waters, picturesque landscape, and an atmosphere that’s as peaceful as it is romantic.
One can spend hours strolling along the shore or snorkeling in the clear waters, taking in the beauty of this secluded paradise.
To reach Kalamos Beach, head to the southeastern part of Ios. From Ios Chora, the journey takes around 40 minutes according to Google Maps, but be prepared for a longer and more rustic experience on the winding dirt road. The road is not well maintained, so drive slowly and carefully to avoid any obstacles.
Once you reach Calilo hotel, continue down the dirt road, which descends steeply. Be sure to go slow and steady to ensure your safety. With a tiny car like ours (which we affectionately call a ‘yogurt pot’), we had no issues navigating this route. As you near the beach, you’ll find parking options right on the shore.
The No Name Beach, a hidden beach Greece offers on Ios
Located on Ios’ North coast, we stumbled upon an unassuming yet captivating cove, shrouded in secrecy by its lack of a name. This hidden gem boasts a sandy shoreline, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. While the beach itself is tranquil, the underwater landscape presents a rocky terrain, necessitating the use of watersheds to ensure comfort.
The crystal-clear water, however, offers a stunning glimpse into the marine world, with colourful fish and even hermit crabs visible to the naked eye. The surrounding wild trees and bushes create an atmosphere of serenity, free from human habitation, allowing visitors to truly unwind. During our visit, we were fortunate enough to have the entire beach to ourselves, making it a true private paradise. The secluded nature of this cove only adds to its allure.
To reach this natural wonder, follow these steps: head towards Homer’s Tomb and take a left turn just before the carpark, which will lead you down to the coast. From there, the road will transition into a dirt path, well-maintained but still warranting caution, particularly for low-riding vehicles. Continue along the path until you arrive at a small parking area, then follow the trail to the beach, a leisurely 5-minute stroll.
Tripiti Beach Ios, one of the beaches in Ios only accessible by boat
Trinity Beach, nestled away in the serene landscape of Ios Island, remains one of its best-kept secrets due to its unique accessibility only by sea. The beach boasts a stunning combination of fine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it an idyllic retreat for those seeking solitude.
While Trinity Beach is indeed breathtakingly beautiful, it’s worth noting that other equally picturesque beaches like Kolitsani are more readily available, offering similar experiences at a lower cost. To reach this hidden gem, you have two options: either join a guided boat tour that makes stops at Trinity Beach or rent a vessel from Mylopotas beach. For those looking to explore the island’s coastline, boat tours departing from Ios Port can also be booked to visit Tripiti Beach.

Accessible by foot or car, Gialos Beach is conveniently located at the foot of the town and just a few minutes from the port. A designated car park sits adjacent to the beach, making it easy to arrive on wheels. Moreover, the beach features a wheelchair-accessible path and ramp, enabling visitors with mobility needs to fully enjoy the beach experience and take a dip in the water.
Koumbara Beach ios
Koumbara Beach on Ios Island offers a unique party atmosphere during summer months, with its complex thriving until September when it slows down to reveal a serene and peaceful beach experience. Although a few food and drink spots remain nearby, the overall ambiance takes on a tranquil quality. The sandy shoreline is particularly picturesque at this time of year, although the water clarity isn’t ideal for snorkeling, making it suitable for swimming instead.
Reaching Koumbara Beach is effortless, as it’s only a short drive from town and accessible via a straightforward road route.
Manganari Beach
Manganari Beach, situated at the southernmost tip of Ios, is a sprawling stretch of golden sand flanked by crystal-clear waters. This picturesque haven is well-appointed with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent – a two-sunbed-and-one-umbrella combo costs around €10, with free access after 5pm. As you soak up the Mediterranean charm, take advantage of on-site amenities like cafes, beach bars, showers, and toilets.
The beach is an aquatic enthusiast’s paradise, perfect for snorkelling and swimming. The shallow waters, which remain tranquil for a few meters, make it an idyllic spot to simply unwind. This stunning Ios hotspot even attracts the occasional goat visitor! To get there, follow the southern road on the island, where you can park alongside the beach. Alternatively, during the peak summer season, the bus from Ios Chora provides convenient transportation to Manganari Beach.
Mylopotas Beach, the best beach in Ios for water sports
Mylopotas Beach, an iconic stretch of sand in Ios Chora, is a haven for those seeking relaxation and adventure alike. This picturesque beach is nestled amidst a vibrant town, surrounded by an array of cafes, hotels, and other attractions. Its unique appeal lies in its accessibility – no need to venture far or worry about transportation, as it’s situated along the main road.
Mylopotas Beach is particularly well-suited for those who crave watersports action, with options ranging from windsurfing to paddleboarding. Additionally, visitors can take a boat ride from here to explore nearby Tripiti Beach.
Psathi Beach
Psathi Beach, a stunning stretch of sand, boasts crystal-clear waters and scattered rocks, reminiscent of Agia Theodoti or Kalamos Beach. Although divided into two parts, the beach maintains its natural charm, with a mix of wild and organized areas featuring sunbeds. Due to its popularity among windsurfers, we recommend visiting Psathi Beach on calm days for an optimal experience.
To get there, follow the road eastwards, passing through the scenic route between Kalamos Beach and Agia Theodoti Beach.
Rocky beaches in Ios
Valmas Beach
Valmas Beach, situated near Ios port, is a secluded rocky shoreline that remains relatively untouched due to its challenging swimming conditions. For snorkeling enthusiasts, however, this hidden gem offers unparalleled visibility into the underwater world. The crystal-clear waters provide an ideal setting for spotting fish and capturing stunning underwater photographs without the distraction of sandy sediment.
Reaching Valmas Beach is a straightforward process.
Begin by navigating to Ios port, then enter the town and proceed towards the Archeological Museum of Ios. Once at the museum, veer right down the path towards Alma Bar, which will ultimately lead you to the beach.
Never Bay Ios, one of the best Ios beaches for cliff jumping
Located at the southernmost tip of Ios Island, past Manganari Beach, Never Bay is a unique destination that defies traditional notions of a beach. Instead, it’s a rocky outcropping surrounded by towering cliffs, perfect for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. The main attractions here are cliff jumping and snorkeling, with the added benefit of crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life.
Due to the rocky underwater terrain, you’ll have unobstructed views of the sea floor, making it a snorkeler’s paradise.
When planning your trip to Never Bay, be sure to pack accordingly – there are no facilities nearby, so bring plenty of food and water to sustain you throughout the day. Comfortable footwear is also essential, as the terrain can be rugged. Given its remote location, plan to spend at least 4 hours here to make the most of your adventure.
Getting to Never Bay requires a 30-minute drive down a dirt road that winds its way along steep cliffs. This route is best navigated with an ATV or car, though please note that standard car insurance may not cover damage incurred on dirt roads.
