As you embark on your journey to explore the breathtaking Greek island of Paros, this travel guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of what to expect. While I’ve dedicated a separate article to highlighting the best beaches Paros has to offer, this piece delves into the intricacies of planning a successful trip, covering topics such as our itinerary, accommodation options, transportation methods, activities to indulge in, and, of course, budget considerations for your Paros adventure.
Having spent a week on Paros Island, followed by a week exploring Santorini, I’ll share my personal anecdotes and insights from both experiences. For those interested in learning more about their own Santorini getaway, I’ve written a companion piece on the must-see attractions of this iconic island – including the charming Pyrgos village. However, for now, let’s focus on the wonders Paros has to offer.
Things to do in Paros: what to know before your trip
Greece uses the Euro as its official currency, making it essential for non-EU visitors to order some beforehand to avoid higher fees once they arrive. Although Greek is the primary language spoken, most locals are proficient in English and French. If you’re from within the EU, your phone plan will likely work in Greece. However, if you’re outside of the EU, take advantage of Wi-Fi connectivity at hotels and restaurants.
When it comes to safety, Greece and its islands are generally very secure, but it’s always crucial to keep an eye on your belongings wherever you go. In terms of transactions, ATMs are readily available in town centers, while most establishments accept credit and debit cards. As a precautionary measure, consider carrying some cash with you just in case. Traveling between Greek islands is relatively easy, either by plane or ferry.
Not all islands have an airport, so the most convenient way to get around is via ferry. You can book your tickets through Ferryscanner.
Itinerary and Budget
We planned ahead by booking our flights in May, four months prior to our trip. Our search on Skyscanner led us to book with Go To Gate. The journey took a total of nine hours, with a layover in Athens lasting around two hours. We left Dublin late on the Friday and landed early Saturday morning, giving us a full day to explore the city. I highly recommend building in a layover like this to your travel plans – it can be a great way to make the most of your vacation time.
The first leg of our journey was operated by Aegean Airlines, which we loved due to their generous service and real meals served on board. Our departure was delayed by 40 minutes, but this was understandable given the late hour. We were well-fed and hydrated throughout the flight, with multiple requests for water and juice/ coke happily accommodated. The second leg of our journey was operated by Olympic Air, which was punctual and comfortable.
Although the flight was short at just 20 minutes, we appreciated its efficiency. In total, our round-trip flights cost €926 for two people, or €463 per person. This included one piece of 23kg hold luggage and a cabin bag each. As an aside, we took the ferry to Santorini for around €30 per person and flew back from there. Unfortunately, our first-time experience at the Santorini ferry port was chaotic and overwhelming, resulting in us losing some money.
We’ve since written a dedicated guide to help others navigate this process with ease.
Where to stay on Paros Island
We kicked off our week-long adventure on the Greek island of Paros by booking a studio in Parikia, one of the two main towns on the island. This charming town turned out to be a real gem, and we didn’t regret our decision for a second. If you’re interested in seeing what our studio looked like, be sure to check out our Studio Tour video.
The studio was part of an hotel and was called Anna Parikia’s Studio. With plenty of accommodation options to choose from in Parikia, we relied on Booking.
com to research and book the perfect place for us. As a bonus, creating an account with Booking. com allows you to accumulate points that can be redeemed for discounts on future bookings.
What really made our studio stand out were its two major perks: the breathtaking view from our balcony and the fact that the owners allowed us to use the hotel’s lovely pool. For 640€, we enjoyed a spacious studio with two double beds, a private bathroom, kitchenette, and balcony for seven nights.
To get to our studio from Paros Airport, we took a taxi ride that cost just 20€.
Transportation and Budget
For getting around Paros, we opted for the bus system, which I was initially hesitant about due to my love of freedom and spontaneity. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency and ease of use of the buses. The transportation network is straightforward, with clear schedules and routes. For instance, in August, buses run frequently between main destinations like Naoussa and Parikia, as well as popular beaches such as Piso Livadi, Golden Beach, Logaras, and Punda Beach.
Buses come and go every hour to these hotspots, making it easy to get around without worrying about transportation. Tickets range from €1.80 to €3.40, depending on the destination, which is a great value for those on a budget or unable to drive. Alternatively, you may simply want to relax and let someone else do the driving. One important note is that beaches in the northern part of the island are accessible by bus, but also by taxi boat from Naoussa.
On our first day, we took the bus to Naoussa and planned to take a taxi boat to Kolymbithres Beach, but strong winds prevented us from doing so. It’s essential to keep this in mind when planning your days. Additionally, you can rent bikes or bicycles to get around Paros, providing another option for exploring the island.
Things to do in Paros
Paros Island in Greece is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be uncovered. With its rich history, stunning beaches, and picturesque villages, it’s no wonder why visitors are drawn to this charming Greek island. From exploring the ancient ruins and museums to indulging in water sports and enjoying the local cuisine, there’s an abundance of things to do on Paros and Antiparos. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Paros has something for everyone.
GOING TO THE BEACH
The main attraction in Paros is undoubtedly a visit to its stunning beaches, which can be enjoyed at no cost – making it an ideal choice for budget-conscious travelers. Over the course of our 7-day stay, we managed to explore a total of nine different beaches, including some of the island’s most renowned ones. For those interested in learning more about the best beaches in Paros, we invite you to read this article. Furthermore, the beaches are easily accessible by bus or car.
As for amenities, expect to pay around €10-40 for two sunbeds and one umbrella. Some of the top beaches in Paros include Kolymbithres beach, Logaras beach, and Santa Maria beach.
WATCHING THE SUNSET IN PAROS
While Santorini’s sunsets may get all the attention, Paros offers a breathtakingly beautiful alternative. In fact, watching the sunset in Paros is an experience that rivals its famous neighbour. The Greek sunsets are truly stunning, reminiscent of those found in Corsica – and they’re definitely worth witnessing. In Parikia, you can enjoy the spectacle from the windmill or the picturesque promenade lined with restaurants.
As the colours dissolve into the crystal-clear waters, you’ll be treated to a truly unforgettable moment that will leave you feeling grateful. It’s an experience that won’t disappoint – and one that you’ll treasure long after your trip is over.
GETTING A MASSAGE ON THE BEACH
Relaxation meets rejuvenation at the beach! One of our favorite experiences was indulging in a therapeutic massage right on the shore. Our go-to spot was Logaras Beach, where we treated ourselves to not one, but two incredible massages. Each 20-minute session left us feeling pampered and refreshed. And the best part? The entire experience only set us back €35 for the both of us.
RENTING AN ATV TO EXPLORE PAROS ISLAND
Discovering Paros on four wheels can be a game-changer for your island getaway. Renting a quad bike for at least a day is an excellent way to venture off the beaten path and experience the island’s hidden gems. We found that a 24-hour rental cost around €55, which was well worth the freedom it provided.
ROAMING AROUND THE STREETS OF PARIKIA AND NAOUSSA
Paros, a charming Greek island, offers a range of activities and experiences for visitors. Two towns that are definitely worth exploring are Parikia and Naoussa, both boasting their own unique character. While we didn’t have the chance to visit Lefkes during our trip, I’ve heard great things about it and would love to return in the future. Of all the islands we visited, Paros was my absolute favorite for its understated charm and authenticity.
Unlike Mykonos or Santorini, which can feel quite touristy, Paros maintains a quiet, laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
CHECK OUT THE WINDMILLS
The picturesque Greek islands are dotted with windmills, and Paros island is no exception. Upon arrival in Parikia, visitors can’t help but notice the presence of these iconic structures. Two prominent windmills stand out – one situated at the start of the charming promenade and another perched atop the village. Rather than following a predetermined path, I recommend exploring and discovering new windmills as you wander through the island’s quaint streets and alleys.
FROM PAROS TO ANTIPAROS and ANTIPAROS BEACHES
As our final day in Greece came to a close, we decided to explore the charming island of Antiparos, accessible by bus from Punda followed by a ferry ride that costs a mere €1.30 per person. This picturesque destination exudes authentic Greek charm and offers a quintessential island experience. While it’s perfect for a day trip, we wouldn’t recommend spending the night here due to its compact size and limited activities.
Instead, focus on soaking up the sun at one of Antiparos’ scenic beaches, which are just a stone’s throw away from the port. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll through the town’s quaint streets, indulge in a delicious lunch or refreshing drink, and take in the laid-back atmosphere.
PAROS NIGHTLIFE
While Paros’ nightlife may not be as vibrant as some other Greek islands, it still offers a delightful experience. The promenade is particularly lovely in the evenings, with its array of restaurants serving up delicious cuisine while you take in the breathtaking sunset views. But evenings aren’t the only time to enjoy yourself – the streets are also bustling during the day with charming, authentic boutiques and refreshing ice cream shops providing respite from the sun’s warmth.
Best Restaurants in Paros
Located amidst the picturesque landscape of Greece, there are numerous restaurants and cafés that serve a wide range of meals throughout the day. As we delve into this article highlighting the best restaurants in Paros, I’ll be sharing my personal experiences and impressions of the places I’ve had the pleasure of trying. The rich Greek culinary heritage is an integral part of the island’s charm, making it a must-experience aspect of your Paros trip.
