The sweet spot is June to September, but keep in mind that late September can be a bit cooler, especially at night, so it’s a good idea to pack a light sweater and some pants for the evenings.
Summer is also the busiest time on the island, with July and August being the most popular months. However, Milos is a significant island, and you’ll still find plenty of room to spread out. We visited in September and found the atmosphere was very relaxed, making it an excellent choice for couples or those seeking a more peaceful experience. While not overly crowded, this mode of transportation can be a convenient option for those who prefer not to fight for seats or wait excessively long. Although we didn’t utilize the bus service ourselves, we can provide some insight based on our experience with the bus system on Paros Island, which shares similarities with Milos.

However, it’s essential to note that Milo’s infrastructure is not fully developed, especially in its south-western regions.
The roads are often unmaintained, and phone service is scarce or non-existent in these areas. In the event of a car issue, assistance may be difficult to access, as local car services do not operate in this part of the island. Renting an ATV, buggie, scooter to go to Milos beaches
Renting an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), buggy, or scooter on Milos island is a great way to reach the beautiful beaches. Given that ATVs are ubiquitous here, you shouldn’t hesitate to rent one for your adventure. The dirt roads leading to some of the stunning beaches can be quite rough, with numerous potholes and holes. In such cases, an ATV’s four-wheel-drive capability makes it much more suitable than a car for navigating these challenging routes.
Boating to Milos secluded beaches
While some of Milos’ most stunning beaches are inaccessible by car, particularly in the South West, this is also where you’ll find many of the island’s crown jewels. To explore these hidden gems, consider renting a boat for either half a day or a full day. This will grant you the freedom to drive your private vessel to whichever beach catches your eye, eliminating the risk of damaging a rental car.
Our experience with this approach was particularly memorable when we rented a boat to visit Kleftiko and its surrounding beaches, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the island’s natural beauty.

The site is easily accessible by car, with a designated parking area visible from the road. As you approach, you’ll notice the beach is divided into two sections, each featuring its own unique cove. The first part, located on your right, boasts a breathtaking narrow canal formed by towering cliffs that encircles a thin strip of white sand.
A fence and warning sign discourage visitors from venturing down to this section, which we found to be largely deserted during our visit. While it’s tempting to explore this area, the natural tunnel created by the wind and time is still awe-inspiring. Take your time to absorb the scenery. The second part, situated on the left when facing the sea, offers an easily accessible beach with a tranquil atmosphere.
This lesser-known section of Papafragas often gets overlooked in Milos’ beach guides, making it a hidden gem for visitors. To reach this area, follow the cliffs and you’ll find yourself at another scenic cove. The beach may not be large, but on calm days, it’s perfect for swimming through the tunnel formed by the cliffs or exploring the coastline. Just keep in mind to watch out for sea urchins.

Fyriplaka beach, situated adjacent to Tsigrado beach, proved to be an serendipitous discovery during our excursion to Milos. As we turned around after visiting Tsigrado, we stumbled upon Fyriplaka and were thoroughly delighted with our decision. Alogomandra beach, one of the best wild Milos beaches
Alogomandra beach, situated between Sarakiniko and Papafragas on Milos’ north coast, stole our hearts with its tranquil atmosphere. While not boasting any striking features, it offered a serene escape from the crowds. We timed our visit perfectly, arriving just before sunset to witness the breathtaking light show. The beach was ours alone, allowing us to soak up the beauty of the sea and sky. Unorganised but unspoiled, Alogomandra doesn’t provide amenities like food or washrooms.
However, the road leading to the beach is easily navigable by car, with ample parking space right by the shore. For those willing to explore, a hidden gem awaits at the beginning of the beach. A small white abandoned house sits near the parking area, and descending the stairs to the right reveals a stunning cave carved by natural rock formations. As the day drew to a close, the light within this secret cavern was nothing short of incredible.
Plathiena Beach, a Milos beach with natural shade
Located just two kilometers from the charming town of Plaka on Milos’ North Coast, Plathiena beach is a picturesque haven with a horseshoe shape and fine sand. The surrounding trees offer natural shade, while the cliffs in the background provide a stunning backdrop. As the day draws to a close, the red hues of the setting sun are beautifully reflected off these cliffs. The crystal-clear waters, shallow enough for snorkeling on calm days, add to the beach’s appeal.

On the north coast of Milos, between Sarakiniko and Alogomandra beach, lies Mytakas – a charming coastal destination that boasts a beautiful sandy shoreline and crystal-clear waters. This idyllic spot is perfect for snorkeling and water activities, offering an immersive experience amidst the Mediterranean’s turquoise hues. However, it’s essential to note that Mytakas can be affected by Meltemi winds, which may bring strong gusts of wind. For the best experience, consider visiting on a calm day.
While exploring this picturesque beach, take some time to appreciate the traditional fishing houses nearby, built in the classic Milos style – a testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage.
Gerakas beach
Gerakas Beach, a secluded paradise only accessible by boat, has gained popularity among tourists. While many tours make a brief stop in Gerakas Bay, allowing visitors to indulge in the crystal-clear waters and breathtaking surroundings, it’s a place that warrants more than just a fleeting glance. The beach’s unique feature is its dramatic setting, flanked by towering striped cliffs that seem to rise straight out of the sea.
On our return journey from Kleftiko, we caught a glimpse of Gerakas Bay but unfortunately didn’t have time to linger and take in its beauty.

Venturing to Kastanas beach on the East Coast of Milos is a thrilling adventure in itself! The winding dirt road leading to the secluded cove isn’t suitable for cars, so it’s recommended to park outside the designated mining area and walk the approximately one-kilometer distance to the shore. Alternatively, arrive by boat for a more leisurely experience. While an ATV might be feasible on these roads, it’s crucial to weigh the risks against the potential damage to your vehicle in Greece.
If you do decide to drive an ATV, be prepared to justify any damages incurred. As one of Milos’ best-kept secrets, Kastanas beach is a true gem nestled amidst sulphur mines. Due to its secluded location, few visitors make the trek here, ensuring that you’ll likely have the entire beach to yourself. The picturesque coastline features dramatic white, pink, and white cliffs, which meet turquoise waters that are nothing short of breathtaking.
Keep in mind that this unorganized beach requires self-sufficiency – be sure to bring ample food, water, and supplies for your stay. Don’t forget to prioritize sun protection, as the intense heat can reflect off the rocks, especially during peak hours.
Paleochori beach, one of the best Milos beaches with red rocks
Paleochori beach, situated on Milos’ south side, is a standout red rock beach. The well-maintained road and ample parking make it easily accessible by car or bus from Adamantas, with the journey taking around 20 minutes. As you venture further down the beach, you’ll find fewer people and arrive at the more natural, secluded section – our personal favorite. It’s worth noting that this end of the beach is also where nudists often gather (though you’re welcome to bring your swimsuit too). The beach itself is a delightful mix of sand and pebbles, making sea shoes a good idea for added foot comfort.
One of Milos’ most beloved beaches, Paleochori’s unique charm stems from its towering red cliffs that dramatically contrast with the crystal-clear turquoise water. Its scenery bears some resemblance to Santorini’s famous Red Beach. If you’re keen on spotting local wildlife, keep an eye out for the goats and their shepherd, who often venture down from the cliffs – we were thrilled to spot them during our stay! Their fearless descent will leave you in awe of their confidence and agility.
Provatas beach
Provatas Beach lies approximately 20 minutes southwest of Plaka. While accessible by car via nearby parking, visitors can also reach it via bus. This organized beach features sunbeds and amenities for a leisurely lunch or refreshment. The shoreline itself is characterized by a long, slender strip of golden sand and crystal-clear waters.
Although the scenic setting, with its dramatic cliffs, makes Provatas Beach an inviting spot, it does have a tendency to get crowded and feel slightly more touristy. For those seeking a more secluded beach experience, there are other excellent options on the island of Milos to explore.
Kipos beach
Unlike Provatas Beach, Kipos is a rugged coastline in Milos’ south, characterized by towering cliffs and crystal-clear aquamarine waters. The pebbly shoreline owes its formation to the gradual erosion of these cliffs over time. Accessible by both car and boat, this off-the-beaten-path gem boasts a scenic restaurant perched atop the hill, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea for a memorable dining experience.
For couples seeking a secluded getaway, Kipos is an idyllic retreat to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other. On your way here, be sure to stop at the historic Church of Panagia Kipou, a traditional landmark that adds to the area’s charm.
Agia Kiriaki
Agia Kiriaki, a stunning sandy beach on Milos Island’s southern coast, is accessible via a well-maintained yet steep road. Be cautious of your speed as you approach the picturesque bay. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a traditional taverna, soft white sand, and crystal-clear waters that seem to stretch on forever. The surrounding trees provide natural shade, while the majestic mountains add to the beach’s unique charm.
Our discovery of Agia Kiriaki was serendipitous, as we stopped here to pick up our boat for the day. We arrived at 8:00 am, and the beach was still waking up, with only a hint of sunlight peeking over the horizon. The tranquility was breathtaking, and we highly recommend an early morning visit to experience the same peaceful atmosphere.
Gerontas beach
As our boat ride back to Kleftiko came to an end, we yearned for a tranquil beach experience to alleviate our seasickness. Our quest led us to Gerontas beach, accessible only by boat. The serenity was palpable, with only one other boat stopping here during our three-hour sojourn – it felt like our own private paradise! This secluded gem is protected from the wind, boasting thin white sand that sizzles in the sun.
What truly stole our attention were the dramatic caves and carved cliffs surrounding us, providing a picturesque backdrop for our relaxation. As we sought refuge from the scorching heat, the crystal-clear waters beckoned us to snorkel and explore the underwater world.
Achivadolimni beach
Achivadolimni beach, situated on Milos’ inner coast, boasts a stunning stretch of golden sand that stretches along the shore. The breathtaking view of the surrounding coastline, including Adamas, makes it an ideal spot for relaxation and taking in the natural beauty of the area. However, our visit was marked by strong winds and rough waters, likely due to the beach’s alignment with the entrance of the nearby bay.
Despite the challenging conditions, we were impressed by the picturesque surroundings, featuring towering mountains and lush vegetation. We highly recommend visiting on a calm day to fully appreciate the beach’s charms. The beach is equipped with a seasonal bar that also offers sunbeds for visitors to enjoy. Accessing the beach via car can be an adventure in itself, as the road leading down is more of a dirt track than a proper road.
The route is long and winding, featuring large potholes that require slow driving. If you’re not prepared for this challenge, it may be wiser to park at the top of the hill and descend via the stairs, which take only a few minutes. We learned this the hard way, but ultimately made it to the beach without incident.

Papakinou beach, one of the best Milos beaches for windy days
Papakinou beach, located in the southernmost part of Adamas, boasts a serene atmosphere and stunning visuals. The 500-meter stretch of golden sand is flanked by shallow waters that are crystal clear, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. Lush trees provide natural shade, creating a peaceful ambiance that’s perfect for unwinding. Accessing Papakinou beach is easy, with options to walk from Adamas town or drive and park across the street.
Despite being situated along the road, the beach remains remarkably quiet, thanks in part to the lack of traffic during the day when visitors are exploring the island. One of Papakinou’s greatest assets is its unique position within the crescent-shaped Milos Island. The north shore of the island provides a natural barrier against strong winds, making it an exceptional spot on blustery days.
We had the pleasure of visiting during a few windy days and found that Papakinou beach was a haven from the gusts. The calm waters and peaceful atmosphere allowed us to indulge in leisurely activities like napping or simply taking in the scenery. The view from Papakinou beach is nothing short of breathtaking, with Adamas’ traditional white-washed houses and church standing out against the backdrop of the internal coast and the island’s other end.

Lagada beach
As we explored Adamas on our first day, a hidden gem caught our attention – Lagada beach. Located at the end of the port, after the restaurants, this tranquil spot is surprisingly peaceful despite being near a hotel and bar. The beach itself boasts a thin layer of golden sand, lush trees for shade, and remarkably clear waters. The view is breathtaking, taking in the Bay, boats, and the coastline on the opposite side.

Klima beach
Located just north of Adamas, the picturesque fishing village of Klima Beach boasts a strip of fine sand that’s perfect for sipping a drink while taking in the breathtaking sunset colours. The vibrant hues of the setting sun are beautifully reflected off the colourful fishing houses that line the shore, creating an atmosphere that’s uniquely Milos. When venturing out to explore the numerous unorganized beaches along Milos’ coastline, it’s essential to be prepared. A thoughtful packing list can make all the difference in ensuring a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

While it’s always a good idea to come prepared when visiting the beach, having food with you at all times is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, many beaches lack facilities altogether, leaving you vulnerable to hunger pangs brought on by the scorching sun and water activities. Leaving to grab lunch can be a real nuisance, which is why we recommend packing snacks or a full meal to enjoy a relaxing picnic with your partner.
Additionally, eating at beachside restaurants can quickly become an expensive affair, so bringing your own grub allows you to stay within budget and allocate the savings towards other trip expenditures.
Drink/Water
When heading to Milos’ stunning beaches, don’t forget to pack a refillable water bottle. The scorching sun and hot sand can quickly dehydrate you, making heat stroke a real concern. While many organized beaches offer water at bars and restaurants, it’s still a good idea to carry your own supply to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day.

While plastic water bottles are still prevalent on Milos due to concerns about potable water, we found that having a reusable bottle can be a game-changer. To make the most of your beach time, consider pouring bottled water into your reusable bottle for a fresh supply throughout the day.
Alternatively, you can freeze sealed plastic bottles and bring them to the beach, where they’ll slowly thaw and provide a refreshing drink as needed. Depending on our circumstances, we often combine both methods to ensure we have access to cool, potable water all day long.
Sunscreen
When hitting the shores of Milos, a crucial consideration is protecting yourself from the powerful Mediterranean sun. With winds whipping up the coast, the risk of getting burned increases significantly. To ensure a comfortable and safe tanning experience, be sure to liberally apply sunscreen as part of your beach essentials.
Umbrella
When it comes to beachside amenities on Milos, some stretches of coastline do offer sunbed rentals starting at around €10-€20. While this may not seem like a significant expense initially, the costs can add up over the course of a week (a whopping €70!). We’ve found that opting for our own portable umbrella, which set us back a one-time fee of just €10, proved to be a more practical and cost-effective solution for our entire Greek escapade.
This approach allowed us to enjoy the sun without breaking the bank.

When heading to the beach, it’s always a good idea to come prepared with some cash. While most places accept cards, there are still some that don’t, and you never know when you might want to treat yourself to a drink or a massage. In fact, we had a lovely experience on one of Paros’ beaches where we were offered a massage for around €20. Having some cash on hand can really make the difference in these kinds of situations. So, don’t forget to bring some along with you.
